Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the digital world, enabling unprecedented levels of content creation, personalisation, and accessibility. From generating realistic text, images, and videos to providing tailored recommendations, AI is revolutionising how media is produced and consumed. This transformation has far-reaching implications for culture, business, and society as a whole.

One of the most significant opportunities for AI is its potential to democratise content creation and enhance creative expression. By lowering barriers to entry and enabling rapid prototyping, AI empowers a broader range of individuals and organisations to produce high-quality content. This democratisation hopefully leads to a more diverse and inclusive media landscape, reflecting a wider array of perspectives and experiences.

Platforms like Suno.AI, which use AI to generate realistic music, singing and dialogues, are already making it easier for content creators to produce engaging audio content without the need for expensive studio setups or voices.

Moreover, AI-driven tools can streamline production processes, reducing costs and increasing efficiency. This in turn allows for a greater number of projects to be realised and frees up creators to focus on the creative aspects of their work rather than the technical complexities.

For example, Channel 1 News has been using AI to automate various aspects of their news presentation, generating newsreader avatars and recommending relevant footage and graphics, in theory freeing their journalists to focus on investigation and quality reporting. The hope is to focus high quality resources where they matter most.

AI also holds immense promise for enhancing accessibility, making it easy to automate generation of subtitles, audio descriptions, and sign language videos. We use some of these tools today at Yopla, making our resources increasingly accessible and easy to digest for a wider variety of needs.

However, the rapid advancement of AI, particularly in media, also raises significant ethical and societal concerns. The potential for AI to generate deepfakes and spread misinformation poses serious risks to public discourse and trust. Without proper safeguards and transparency, AI could be used to manipulate opinions, sow discord, and undermine democratic processes.

OpenAI's Sora, a powerful language model capable of generating highly realistic video, has raised concerns about the potential for AI-generated fake news and propaganda. Check out some of the early demoes in the video below; these created enough concern about blurring the lines between reality and artificial reality, that Open AI has not released Sora and is instead working with creatives, legislators and more to consider the implications.

The growth of fake news and deepfakes is a significant, and multiplying concern. A study found that the number of publications on fake news detection using machine learning and deep learning techniques has, unsurprisingly, increased dramatically from 2018 to 2022, highlighting the growing risks and need for research in this area. Consider also the use of AI in mainstream media, where it raises questions about data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the perpetuation of stereotypes. All areas of concern familiar to us today and acutely felt by those affected by increasingly sophisticated cyber criminals.

It's also a risk that as AI systems are trained on existing data, they risk amplifying and entrenching societal biases, leading to discriminatory outcomes and the marginalisation of certain groups.

It's of note that because of the trillions of parameters (pieces of data) required to make AI LLM's (Large Language Models) work so well, they are now often trained on each other.

Beyond media, AI is having a profound impact on businesses across industries. While AI offers opportunities for increased innovation, resilience, performance and competitive advantage, it also presents risks and challenges that organisations from all spheres must navigate carefully. Ethical concerns about AI in organisations include potential job displacement, particularly for lower-skilled roles, as well as issues of privacy, security, and algorithmic bias.

As AI becomes more deeply embedded in organisations operations and decision-making, it is crucial for leadership to develop robust governance frameworks and ethical guidelines. These should include ensuring diverse and representative datasets, conducting regular audits for bias, and providing clear explanations of how AI systems make decisions. It will also be crucial to forecast future risks and work with teams to close the digital literacy divide within them, ensuring that AI assistants are working with us and our teams, as well as functioning within ethical frameworks.

Consider your organisations mission and the role that people play in achieving that mission, not just our teams and colleagues, but our clients and their's. Creating ethical, diverse and inclusive policies that extend to the tools we use will be crucial to building trust across stakeholders.

This is why there is an urgent need for proactive regulation and responsible development practices. Establishing comprehensive legal frameworks, such as the European AI Act, are essential to mitigate risks, protect individual rights, and ensure that AI is deployed in a way that benefits society as a whole.

Collaboration between industry, academia, policymakers, and the public will continue to be crucial to address these complex challenges. By engaging in multidisciplinary research, open dialogue, and inclusive decision-making processes, we should further develop evidence-based approaches to AI governance that balance innovation with the protection of fundamental values.

Spoiler: it is not another jazzy social-media campaign.

I get the question constantly, usually right after someone’s eyes glaze over a LinkedIn post stuffed with clouds, arrows and the word AI in neon bold. They hear “digital” and their brain free-associates to TikTok ads. Meanwhile the real battleground—operations, efficiency, decision-making—barely gets a cameo. That blind spot is dangerous, because as Jeff Bezos likes to remind us,

“There is no alternative to digital transformation. Visionary companies will carve out new strategic options for themselves — those that don’t adapt will fail.”

So let’s unpack the term without the waffle. At Yopla we treat digital transformation as the disciplined rewiring of how your organisation sees, decides and delivers.
